Reflections reflected…

When I was a child in St. Petersburg I had a recurring dream (or nightmare) of stepping into a puddle with my boots and finding myself submerged in a watery abyss. I can still recall some of these puddles—though I’m not sure whether they were real or imagined.

Today my dreams (or nightmares) unfold along different lines, and the puddles can be a comforting sight. In the park especially they appear like portals into a calmer, more orderly universe.

All the harsh winter weather ❄️ reminded me of some of the photographs I took in the city last summer. ☀️

I snapped this one on the Lower East Side–possibly after stopping by a photo meetup at the @icp . The shuttered mom-and-pop business, overlaid with graffiti, is typical of the neighborhood. Some of the shops are still around, though, giving the area a somewhat authentic vibe.

I spotted this memorable lady on a ride back from Brooklyn one Sunday. I thought that she might be heading to see a play or a concert in the theater district.

I sometimes wonder whether these types of photos do anyone any good, but at least they make me feel less alone for a little while.

I take the subway almost every day and, like most

I take the subway almost every day and, like most New Yorkers, the commute isn’t something that I look forward to. Once I’m on the train, though, I immediately become fascinated with the faces and gestures; with the stories the people around me tell without words.

I don’t always feel comfortable photographing with my eye-catching camera in the small space, but I can always snap a few photos with my phone, invisible and unnoticed.

How do you feel about photographing on the subway or other forms of public transportation?

Happy 2025!

I don’t really make New Year’s resolutions, but I try to remind myself every so often of the things that really matter. Then I try to figure out how to go about my day in ways that respect those values.

There’s no formula. Every year is different; there are new challenges and new distractions.

In the last few years, though, the thing that made the biggest difference was to simply show up–to be present and receptive in the places where I’m needed, and at times when something positive or meaningful can happen.

Photography and painting let me practice being present more often, teaching me that there are more places and moments where something important is happening–and that it’s worth showing up for all of them.

Just another rainy, steamy night in NYC. I thought that I was over photographing steam, but then I saw this big cloud of it, billowing across a midtown intersection and I knew that there would be an interesting picture somewhere down the line.

I fell in love with printmaking after taking class

I fell in love with printmaking after taking classes with Sylvie Covey @sylviecovey at the Art Students League @aslnyc last year. The two prints at Loy Luo Art Space are pigment transfers from original photographs I took in the city. I used @inkaid1 transfer sheets and an alcohol-based medium to print the images on archival printmaking paper.

The prints are detailed but unpredictable–each image is unique, attesting to the materiality of the process.

The show runs through December 12 at Loy Luo Art Space 101 Lafayette street–just steps from the N/R/Q and 6 subway stop!
